Mexican Salsa Roja Recipe

Salsa Roja is a type of spicy red sauce in Mexican cuisine. The two most common salsas in Mexico are salsa Roja, a red salsa prepared with tomatoes, and salsa verde, a green salsa prepared with tomatillos. Both are versatile salsas enjoyed with a wide variety of dishes.

This sauce is so perfect for pouring over your burritos, drenching your tacos, dripping over huevos divorciados or rancheros, basically, any Mexican dish served at your favorite local Mexican restaurant. This is Mexican salsa at its finest.

Mexican Red Sauce Salsa Roja

This is the best recipe for Mexican red sauce, the typical sauce that is prepared in the molcajete, the flavor of all the ingredients you will love.


(Serves 12)

  • 4 tomatoes, crushed

  • 2 serrano peppers, minced (substitute with jalapeño or green chili bird)

  • 1/2 onions, chopped

  • 1 garlic clove, minced

  • Oil

  • Salt and Pepper to Taste

  • Fresh cilantro, minced


  1. Put the tomatoes in a pan, add the chilies. Leave until cooked.

  2. Grind the tomatoes together with the chilies, add the garlic and chopped onion, stir well.

  3. Add a little coriander and stir well with the sauce.

  4. Season to taste and add a drizzle of olive oil.
